Outwardly, everything appears calm. Inwardly, there is movement: emotions rearrange themselves, ideas mature, plans slowly take shape. Nothing is spoken yet — not out of fear, but out of care — allowing things to settle before being lived.

During these pauses, change happens quietly. New habits emerge, new skills develop, interests grow unnoticed. There’s a reluctance to speak too soon, as if naming what’s forming might disrupt its balance. Old fears loosen their grip, new uncertainties arise — and with them, new directions.

This is where tension appears: holding onto what was or stepping toward what could be. The past offers familiarity; the future promises renewal. Both coexist. The past remains part of who you’ve become. The future invites a lighter way of living — with presence, openness, and freedom.

Life’s pauses are fertile, yet often overlooked. We become caught between what has already happened and what we hope will come. We live for a better future while finding comfort in a past that no longer changes.

But it’s in this quiet space between times that life truly unfolds. Notice the simple things. Drink your coffee slowly. Accept the affection of those who love you. Share ordinary moments. Protect what is still forming in silence. When the right moment arrives, the path will already be visible.

As the boat glides slowly along the waters of the Yangtze, heading toward Shanghai, I listen — without meaning to — to a conversation unfolding beside me.

“Time is strange,” one of them says. “I remember the first time I traveled down this river. I was just a boy. My father came to sell fabrics made in our village. I went with him to learn how to trade.”

“In what way is time strange?” the other asks. “I see nothing unusual.”

“It’s strange because, back then, words carried their own weight. My father negotiated, and that was enough. Today, agreements require documents, signatures, proof that the deal truly exists.”

For a moment, something along the riverbank draws their attention. They fall silent and sip their tea. When the cup is nearly empty, the first man adds, almost to himself:

“Time is strange… because not even the rivers remain the same.”

Where do you imagine yourself five years from now? Who will be celebrating your achievements with you? Where will you be living? What kind of routine will you have built? I sincerely hope you reach many of the things you dream of. Still, today I’d like to reflect on the anxiety that often surrounds our goals.

A new year brings new goals. Joining a gym. Writing a book. Reading a challenging work. Running a marathon. Learning a new language. The list seems endless. But at what point do we stop merely completing tasks and start truly living experiences?

The more goals we accumulate, the more pressure we feel to achieve them — and, paradoxically, the less joy we find along the way. We live in a culture shaped by instant feedback and immediate rewards, which makes it easy to abandon anything that doesn’t show quick results. Goals that require time, consistency, and patience are often the first to be left behind.

When I started Data S2 in 2018, I believed the project would mature quickly. Over time, I learned that some paths take longer to unfold — and that adjustment is part of growth. The company evolved, found operational balance, and became a space for research and continuous learning. What kept me moving forward was not urgency, but meaning.

Not everything allows us to predict the outcome in advance. Still, having a deeper purpose often sustains the journey. If the goal is better health, perhaps the first step isn’t restriction, but a simple walk. If the goal is financial stability, small and consistent habits may matter more than drastic measures. Time, when respected, does its work.

Some things need room to mature. Don’t give up simply because results take longer than expected. Many meaningful constructions move at their own pace.

“What makes you smile? What makes you laugh out loud?”

I was asked this recently, and I realized I couldn’t remember the last time I laughed so freely that I simply surrendered to the moment.

We are living through unusual times. Our social circles often shrink to studies, work, sports, religious commitments — and the cycle repeats. Turning on the television — for those who still do — means constant exposure to conflict, crises, and excess. Social media keeps us immersed in endless stimulation and instant rewards. Everything feels unstable, echoing what Zygmunt Bauman described as the liquidity of modern life.

This reflection isn’t about listing problems, but about understanding how our environment shapes us. Are we laughing less because we’re surrounded by heavier narratives? Look around: colors have faded, designs have become uniform, expressions more restrained. If laughter feels rare, what is our environment trying to tell us? How much of our emotional fatigue comes from overconnection and constant stimulation?

Perhaps it’s time to return to the essential — to what is human. What truly makes you feel well? I’m reminded of a question Steve Jobs reportedly asked himself each morning: if I do today what I’m about to do, will it make me happy? He believed that answering “no” for many consecutive days was a warning sign.

Not everyone can change immediately. But everyone can plan when to change. Some need years to build stability and breathe more freely. Others must climb steep steps just to reach the basics. And some simply need someone willing to listen, so they can regain strength.

I don’t know when you’ll read this, but know this: you’re not alone.

Today, I want to talk about complete change. You might think — and I partially agree — that change has always been a theme in this space. Still, it’s worth naming a specific kind of transformation: deep and intentional change.

Let’s try a simple exercise.
Pause for a moment and reflect on what no longer makes sense in your life. Do you have control over it? If you choose to change direction, what would the consequences be? Is there a parallel plan that allows stability while things realign? This kind of movement has a name: pivoting.

Pivoting means changing direction while preserving what you’ve already built. The word comes from pivot, implying rotation around a fixed point — not starting over, but repositioning with clarity.

Data S2 was initially conceived as a software company. Over time, reflection revealed its true nature as an independent research lab. On a personal level, I experienced something similar. For a while, I felt limited in how I could contribute to my community. With time and reflection, I realized I could serve in different ways — supporting immigrant communities and connecting people through languages and shared experiences. It was something I had always wanted to do, but it required courage to act on it. In short, it required pivoting.

Don’t be afraid to change direction. The greater risk lies in repeating the same actions and expecting outcomes that no longer align with who you are. Life moves quickly, and it’s too short to be lived in the shadow of “what if.” Choose instead the kind of actions that make you feel truly alive.

There’s a phrase in front of where I write that captures this perfectly: may death find you fully alive.

We’ve been quiet for almost a month, but there are good reasons for that. Some are practical, others simply honest excuses — all part of the process. In this first conversation of 2026, I’d like to look back on 2025 and share a few guiding directions for the year ahead.

In 2025, I opened several paths at once. That dispersion was visible at times, but it served an important purpose: it helped me understand more clearly what I do not want for my life. Not every open door needs to be walked through.

As I entered my thirties, I realized that the years dedicated to Data S2 were, above all, a powerful learning journey. Not every goal was reached as initially imagined, but the experience taught me discipline, resilience, and clarity. Sustaining products over many years with responsibility and focus offered lessons that go far beyond numbers.

In 2024, Data S2 went through a significant structural transition. By 2025, this evolution matured into what I called The Year of the Phoenix — a time to reassess identity, culture, and direction. Data S2 continues into 2026 as an independent research lab focused on data, particularly within the financial and banking sectors. Our aim is to create impact through accessible knowledge, with weekly articles and thoughtful analysis.

2025 was also a year of experimentation. One such experience was 3HG Discounts, a practical exploration of affiliate marketing. While the project reached significant visibility, it reinforced an important lesson: some models require specific scale, capital, and timing to become sustainable. It was a valuable learning experience.

The decision to pursue an exchange program in New Zealand led to the creation of Auckland Today. What began as a newsletter evolved into a personal knowledge base — a place to document research, preparation, and reflections on living abroad. It’s not a commercial project, but a space for learning and sharing.

Finally, this space. In 2025, I published my first books — one in Portuguese (Enquanto a banda tocar) and another in English (2025: The Year of the Phoenix). In 2026, I plan to continue writing, especially in English, with new projects already taking shape.

augsmachado.com remains a space for reflection, emotional safety, and quiet construction. Much of this writing happens in silence, but every reader who walks alongside this journey gives it meaning. In the coming year, I aim to publish two reflective articles per week, occasional poems, and possibly explore audio formats.

Circuit Zero

Circuit Zero is the space of self-perception — the consecrated object is ourselves.
It’s the realm of the alter ego, where self-praise carries little weight because we are both the creator and the critic. It’s where we see our progress but also where we face the pressure of what hasn’t yet worked.

I’ve been publishing on LinkedIn since 2018 — the same year I founded Data S2. It took five years to earn recognition: in 2023, I was named a Global LinkedIn Top Voice under 30 — a Portuguese writer who generated measurable business impact and whose ideas were worth following. Writing has always been a way to express what I feel, even when, in Circuit Zero, I doubted my own words.

Circuit One

Circuit One belongs to those who believe in us when we no longer do — the circuit of roots.

They’re the ones who comfort us, who buy our first product, who whisper: “Keep going.”

At Data S2, we provided free eBay data collection services for seven years — serving over 2,300 users and handling millions of monthly requests with sub-second latency. But last year, my team disbanded, and I faced a question: stop or continue?

I chose to return to my roots. Data S2 remains a data company, but with a renewed vision — focused on APIs, automation, machine learning, and quantum computing. The faces have changed, but the essence endures. I continue the journey — grateful to those who once shared it with me.

Circuit Two

Circuit Two belongs to the friends crazy enough to believe in your dreams even more than you do.

They push you forward when self-motivation fades.
